Cruise company Hurtigruten Norway share plans today for a zero-emissions electric cruise ship with huge solar panels. The date of first sailing is 2030.
The class of ship will be called "Sea Zero." 12 partners and the Norway research institute SINTEF are cooperating.
The zero-emissions ship's sails will retract so that the ship can pass under bridges, as shown here in a rendering. Estimates suggest that the batteries will have a range of 300 to 350 nautical miles and are charged in port. The solar sails provide additional power to extend range.
